I am writing in regards to the poor customer service that was provided on the evening of November 19, 2006 at the MJ Barley Hoppers located in Centro Ybor. Our organization chose MJ Barley Hoppers for the restaurant for that evening and I can say that each and every person there was not happy.
A large group of us approx. 70 customers expected to eat at the restaurant without any trouble. We originally had given the manager an expectation of anywhere between 50-100 patrons. 70 ended up showing and we were presented with a bill for 100 people. Now we can understand that the restaurant expected to prepare for 100 people, but after approx. 40-50 people had gotten their food, 20 of us had not eaten or had gotten only a tiny amount of food and were told that they had stopped preparing anymore food, because we could not pay for the 30 people less 100 that did not show up. So if the restaurant had prepared for 100 people, where was the food for at least 70 people?
The manager that evening, I believe his name was Scott, did not take any blame for the lack of food and not until we had made a huge scene in the restaurant did he agree to bring out more food. He had excuses that people took more then they should have, well then why did he set it up buffet style? If we were suppose to only have so much food on our plate, we should have been served!
On top of the major reason we were unhappy, there wasn't enough seating! We had at least 10-20 people sitting outside in the cold weather, where there food probably got cold as soon as they took their plate outside! Clearly the restaurant was not prepared at all for the amount of business we were about to give them 70 people or 100 people.
I am disappointed that an establishment could not provide the service, not to mention if we had all individually ordered we could have chosen whatever type of food we wanted and probably paid less then the "group discounted charge."
The customer service was so poor, what happens to the customer is always right? The manager that evening did not even attempt to show us he cared that that many people were not fed. He did not apologize at all for any of the poor service. We had a huge group that evening at that restaurant and were the bulk of the patrons for that evening. Not to mention a large percentage of us drank alcohol and provided plenty of business through alcohol alone.
I expect a formal apology, from your organization for the poor service that was provided that evening. NEVER had we ever had an issue with a restaurant with a group our size. We recently ate at DISH right next door and did not have one issue with the amount of food or the quality of service and on top of that, they gave us a major discount that evening for bringing so many people that evening and invited us to return at any time. You guys should learn something from your neighboring restaurants!

I should have listened to the previous posters and not go to this place. First of all, the food was nasty! All precooked food that I wouldn't even give to my dog to eat.
Overpriced for what you are getting. The pizza that my son got was probably a microwaved store bought pizza. The french fries were overdone and the schnitzel was liked chopped steak with absolutely no taste to it at all. The sauce for the Jaeger Schnitzel was plain brown gravy with 4 sliced pieces of mushroom in it. They used the same sauce for the chicken Marsala. The chicken was some sort of pressed chicken like chicken fingers that they tried to pass off as a high quality menu item. The seafood tasted like it was just removed from the water with no seasoning. I think everything was actually microwaved.
If you are looking for a great place to eat, don't go here! McDonalds is better than this place. For the quality of food we got we should not have paid more than $40.00 but we ended up paying almost twice that amount. Go to the Italian, German, French restaurant if you want that kind of food, or even McDonalds:)
Needless to say, I will never eat in a M.J. Barleyhoppers again!

I pretty much agree with the last persons comment. When we walked into MJ's it took about 5 minutes for someone to come seat us. Waiters and other staff were just walking by......at first we thought we were supposed to seat ourselves. The Food was very disapointing! Any fast food chain would have been better. I ordered the Shrimp Pesto Linguini and it had absolutley no taste. Another person at my table ordered the Jaegerschnitzel and that was just plain disgusting.....we are originaly from Germany so we know what it's supposed to taste like. When we got the bill I thought I was going to fall out of my chair (We were four people all together). The bill was over $70 with the Jaegerschnitzel taken off due to bad quality. That is one place I will never every go to again. Looks can be deceiving!! I wish I had read the other reviews before.

i was extremely dissapointed in the service.... this is the second time i have been to riverview MJ's. each time we waited while the hosts watched us at the door and did not greet us for at least 3 minutes. the restaurant was not busy. also the servers did not reccomend any of the food i wanted to eat. our waiter last night sean was very rude as he emptied an ashtray outside where we were eating and also continued to empty the drinks that were on the table onto the street. he also used vulgar language in our presence..... i will NEVER go back to MJ Barleyhoppers. i am sorry for this review, but people should know that this place is more of a biker bar than a place you can go to relax and have a bite to eat.

Service can be slow. Beer selection is good. The food is very hit or miss. Have been here 4 or 5 times and the bartenders always try to put orange in my wheat beer instead of lemon. They need to educate the bar staff more.

Had just returned from the Orange/Blue Game and didn't feel like driving very far. So, we checked out this place as it had just opened. Nice outdoor seating in the front and back. Large indoor eating spaces too. They had Easily 30-40+ beers on tap from the big boyz down to DogFish Head. I didn't even get into the Bottled Stuff. Pints are $6.00 but they're Brit Pints (20 OZ.) which took off some of the price sting. The food was also very good. Service was a little slow but it was pretty crowded. Will prolly go back.
